10x is EASIER than 2x
Jack Beecher, here.
10x is easier than 2x.
What does that even mean?
It means that more ambitious goals are often more attainable than easy ones.
Take a second to let that sink in.
Here’s an example to illustrate my point:
If you’re a salesperson and I told you to double the number of sales you made every week, you’d probably grit your teeth and work harder.
Would you be successful? Yes, most likely.
However, what if I told you to 10x the number of sales?
You can no longer just grit your teeth and work harder. It’s impossible to work 10x harder.
Therefore, you must think outside of the box. You must approach the problem differently.
Maybe there’s something in the sales process you can automate that will save you time. Perhaps you can hire an assistant to do some of the busy work for you.
In that way, it’s important to set goals with exponential improvement, instead of just linear.
The same concept applies to college admissions.
If I told you to 2x your chances of getting into college, what would you do?
Maybe you’d work harder on your essays or spend more time perfecting your activity section.
That’s all fine, and that will help.
But what if I told you to 10x your chances?
Actually, think about it. This question is the answer you need to succeed in admissions.
My answer: I’d probably develop a better showstopper activity.
The takeaway here is not so much what exactly to do but to reframe your mind so that you see ambitious goals as achievable.
It’s often easier to 10x through change than 2x through optimizing what you already have.
Another great thing about 10x goals: they’re often less competitive than 2x ones. There are less people for you to pass on the way to the moon.
Go 10x,
Jack Beecher
P.S. - Have a high-performing high schooler w/ a 3.7 GPA or higher? We'll help get them into at least one of their top 5 dream colleges...and if we don't get them into at least one of their top 5 dream colleges, you don't pay us a penny. Seriously. College admissions isn't rocket science...but it is a science. And we've cracked the code...year, after year, after year. You can learn more about our world renowned all-inclusive, start-to-finish college coaching here and to see if your family qualifies for an introductory call.
P.P.S - Our most common question is "When should we start?!" The answer is, if you truly care about giving your high schooler the best chance of college planning success, you should start NOW. 9th grade is not too early to start! 10th grade is certainly not too early to start! And 11th grade is far, far too late! (supporting data here to show just how much of an advantage you give your child by starting the process early).
