Becoming a Leader
Leadership is one of the most valuable qualities colleges look for in applicants. It demonstrates initiative, responsibility, and the ability to inspire others - skills that translate well to both academic and professional success.
But leadership isn’t just about being the president of a club; it’s about making an impact. Here’s how to develop leadership skills and highlight them effectively on your college application.
Find a Leadership Opportunity (or Create One)
Leadership isn’t just about holding a title; it’s about making things happen. Here’s how you can take the lead:
Step up in existing activities: If you’re already part of a club, sport, or community group, volunteer for a leadership position or take initiative on a project.
Start something new: If a club or organization doesn’t exist at your school, create it. Colleges love students who see a need and take action.
Take leadership outside of school: Leadership opportunities exist in internships, jobs, religious groups, and even among peers. Organizing a study group or coaching younger students counts, too.
Develop Leadership Skills
Being a leader requires skills like communication, decision-making, and teamwork. Here’s how to develop these:
Take responsibility: Own your projects and follow through on commitments.
Communicate effectively: Work on public speaking and writing skills to express your ideas clearly.
Be a problem-solver: Look for ways to improve situations, whether in a club, classroom, or community.
Collaborate: A great leader uplifts others, so focus on teamwork and mentorship.
Make a Meaningful Impact
It’s not enough to say you were "Vice President of XYZ Club." Colleges want to know what you did in that role. Ask yourself:
Did I start a new initiative or improve an existing one?
Did I increase participation or engagement?
Did I raise awareness or funds for an important cause?
Did I mentor others or help build a stronger community?
If you haven’t yet made an impact, start now! Take on a project that improves your school or community.
Showcase Leadership in Your Application
Once you’ve developed leadership skills and taken on roles, it’s important to highlight them on your application:
Activity List (Common App/Coalition App): Clearly describe your leadership roles with specific achievements. Example: President, Debate Club – Organized schoolwide debate tournament, increased club membership by 40%.
Essays: Use your personal statement or supplemental essays to share a compelling leadership story. Show how you overcame challenges, took initiative, or inspired others.
Letters of Recommendation: Teachers or mentors who have seen your leadership in action can provide powerful endorsements.
Whether you step up in a current activity, create something new, or lead in your own way, what matters most is your ability to make a difference. By taking initiative now, you’ll not only strengthen your college application but also build skills that will serve you for life.
