How to Stop Procrastinating in 5 Seconds
There’s a moment every student knows well - when you know you should start an assignment, get out of bed for an early class, or tackle that college admissions essay, but you just...don’t. You sit there, scrolling, overthinking, or waiting for motivation to strike.
Spoiler alert: it won't.
I’ve been there more times than I can count. As someone who thrives on planning and structure, I used to think I could schedule my way out of procrastination. But motivation isn’t something you can pencil in; it’s something you create. That’s why the 5-Second Rule by Mel Robbins changed my life.
If you haven’t heard of it, the rule is simple: The moment you feel hesitation to do a task move in, count down - 5-4-3-2-1 - then go. No negotiating, no excuses. Just action. This tiny mental shift has helped me push through procrastination, silence self-doubt, and take control of my time.
How can student's use this method in their daily lives?
1. Getting Started on College Applications
Writing personal statements can feel overwhelming....where do you even begin? Instead of waiting for inspiration, you can count down from five and open a blank document. That small action gets the ball rolling. Even if you only write a few sentences, it’s progress. And momentum builds from there.
2. Studying When You Don’t Feel Like It
There were so many nights in high school when I felt exhausted, staring at a growing to-do list, convincing myself I’d start "in 10 minutes" which oftentimes became tomorrow which became the night before. Now, when that feeling hits, I count down and just start. No overthinking.
3. Overcoming Fear of Reaching Out
Whether it’s emailing a teacher for a recommendation or networking with someone, its easy to put off menial tasks. But you know the drill by now....count down from five and hit send.
The 5-Second Rule interrupts negative thought patterns and forces you to act before your brain talks you out of it.
The more I’ve used it, the more I’ve built confidence in my ability to do hard things, and that’s a skill that goes beyond college applications - it’s something I’ve integrated into every aspect of my life.
If you’re struggling with motivation, try it today. 5-4-3-2-1 - go! The hardest part is starting, and once you do, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.
Best of luck,

P.P.S - Our most common question is "When should we start?!" The answer is, if you truly care about giving your high schooler the best chance of college planning success, you should start NOW. 9th grade is not too early to start! 10th grade is certainly not too early to start! And 11th grade is far, far too late! (supporting data here to show just how much of an advantage you give your child by starting the process early).
