Maximize Focus, Minimize Stress: We Help Our Students Build Habits for HS, College, and BEYOND
At CollegeConsulting.us, we know that preparing for college isn’t just about submitting applications - it’s about building sustainable habits for success. One of our students recently shared how a simple time management strategy helped them feel more focused and confident before a math test. The best part? It’s a method any student can adopt.
The 50-Minute Study Block: Why It Works
So, why 50 minutes? Research shows that our brains concentrate best in focused chunks with short breaks in between, often called the Pomodoro Technique. It’s long enough to get into deep work, but short enough to avoid burnout. And for students juggling school, activities, and college prep, this kind of efficient study can make a huge difference.
Neera, one of our College Planning specialists, jumped in with her own advice: "One thing that helps me is putting on some Lofi music, and the time flies!" She shared her favorite YouTube playlists as easy, accessible tools to enhance concentration and calm. These are the kinds of holistic, personalized strategies we share with every student we work with, because success isn’t just about what you do; it’s about how you feel while doing it.
Why These Skills Matter for College Admissions
Strong grades and test scores are important, but so are the habits behind them. Colleges want to see students who are self-motivated, reflective, and capable of thriving independently. By teaching students how to study efficiently and stay grounded, we’re setting them up for success long after decision letters arrive.
Try It This Week
We encourage every student to try a 50-minute study block, pair it with some calming music, and see what happens. Whether you’re tackling final exams or starting college essays, it’s a powerful way to reclaim your time and boost your confidence.
Want your student to build these kinds of habits with expert support? Join our College Planning program and get guidance from mentors like Neera, who are dedicated to long-term growth!
Best,

P.S. - Have a high-performing high schooler w/ a 3.7 GPA or higher? We'll help get them into at least one of their top 5 dream colleges...and if we don't get them into at least one of their top 5 dream colleges, you don't pay us a penny. Seriously. College admissions isn't rocket science...but it is a science. And we've cracked the code...year, after year, after year. You can learn more about our world renowned all-inclusive, start-to-finish college coaching here and to see if your family qualifies for an introductory call.
P.P.S - Our most common question is "When should we start?!" The answer is, if you truly care about giving your high schooler the best chance of college planning success, you should start NOW. 9th grade is not too early to start! 10th grade is certainly not too early to start! And 11th grade is far, far too late! (supporting data here to show just how much of an advantage you give your child by starting the process early).
