What is the Honors Section of the Common App?

The thing I found most annoying in the whole admissions process was also the simplest: the honors section of the Common Application.

Questions I often hear about this section are:
What is an honor?
What types of things can go in these spots?
What if my school doesn’t give away honors?
What if I don’t have five good ones?

So I set off to answer them.
