I'm Back! (It's Jack Beecher Again!)

Jack Beecher here

Perhaps you remember me and my blogs from last summer, or maybe your family is new to the program. Either way, I’d like to reintroduce myself, summarize my last year away, and explain how I hope to help your family succeed this summer.

Hi, I’m Jack, a student at Dartmouth College (and a former CC.us student back when I was in high school).  This summer, I am returning to the CollegeConsulting.us team to write weekly blogs related to college admissions as a Student Ambassador. Last summer, I offered the unique insight of a student just finishing the process. I documented each of the core steps along the way:

  1. How I managed to score a 36 on the ACT

  2. How I thought about crafting a school list

  3. How I spent my summers

  4. How I wrote my essays

  5. And ultimately, how I decided which college to attend

This summer, I hope to offer another unique insight: an Ivy League student who just finished their Freshman year. Turns out, the strategies I discussed related to college admissions apply even more in an environment where you're in complete control of your schedule.

To build my credibility a little, here’s how my last year went:

  • 4.0 GPA

  • Joined two impactful clubs

  • Hung out with my friends constantly

  • Worked out daily

  • 8 hours of sleep most nights

  • Spent finals week at the river with my friends almost every day (not cramming)

This is not to brag. Rather, I want to illuminate that you don’t have to sacrifice anything and everything to succeed. There’s a common myth I hear about college when people say out of sleep, friends, grades, health, and clubs, you can only have three. It’s more than possible to have all five. Similarly, I hear a myth about college admissions: it’s hard, time-consuming, and stressful. Although for many people it is, it doesn’t have to be.

This summer, I plan to share the wisdom that helped me personally—wisdom I gained from the CollegeConsulting.us program, talking to Jack Delehey and reading the books he recommended, and my first year at college—to help your family not only crush college admissions but to succeed as you move forward in life.

As a matter of fact, here are my exact goals for your family this summer:

  1. Teach you how to simplify the daunting college admissions process

  2. Give you tips to thrive academically with minimal effort

  3. Shed insights not only applicable to college admissions but all of life

This will be a little different than last summer where I shared specific ACT tips, essay writing strategies, and advice directly related to college admissions. I hope the lessons I write about this summer are far more applicable than to just a three-year admissions window in high school.

Looking forward to it,
Jack Beecher
