Using Math to Optimize Your College Admissions Journey

Maybe my favorite quote ever is from Warren Buffett’s right-hand man, Charlie Munger. He wisely claims, “Mimicking the herd invites regression to the mean.”

For those of you unfamiliar with statistics, regression to the mean summarizes that over a large sample size, the average value of the data will approach its true average. Take flipping a coin, for instance. Sure, with 10 flips, you might see a crazy combination of 10 heads in a row, but over many flips, millions of flips, this is impossible. Within a degree of certainty, over those many flips, the coin will average out to about 50/50.

This applies to college admissions too. If you put in an average amount of work into college admissions, you will receive an average result. That’s what Charlie Munger means. Instead, in our program, we use our motto of “Different > Difficult” to avoid our regression to average.
