Why the 50:10 Study Method Is Sticking With Students (....and Parents Too)
With many sources of distraction, students are finding it harder than ever to focus. But we teach our students one simple habit...and it’s making a real difference.
It’s called the 50:10 method: 50 minutes of focused work followed by a 10-minute break. No phones. No interruptions. Just intentional, sustained effort, and students are loving it.
What’s behind the method’s success? The structure helps build momentum. Rather than trying to power through hours of work, students know exactly when the next break is coming. That makes it easier to put phones away, stay off distracting tabs, and make the most of each block.
Some students are pairing the method with airplane mode to eliminate digital interruptions. The result? Stronger focus, better information retention, and a noticeable difference in how much gets done during a single session.
Of course, not everyone follows the 50:10 formula exactly. Some students are customizing the structure, experimenting with longer blocks or slightly shorter breaks, depending on their task or personal preferences. But the consistent theme remains: planning for focus pays off.
And it’s not just students who are noticing the benefits. Parents are sharing how the 50:10 method has transformed the way their children study at home. One mom even sent in a photo of her daughter’s weekend study group, gathered around a kitchen table, deep into an AP history session.... phones down, laptops open, completely engaged.
Why It Works:
Encourages deep focus by minimizing interruptions
Builds discipline through consistent time management
Reduces procrastination with smaller, manageable chunks
Increases retention by improving attention spans
Supports sustainability with regular breaks help prevent burnout
The 50:10 method offers a practical, proven way to do more, and feel better while doing it.
Want to try it? Start by setting a timer for 50 minutes. Pick one task. Put your phone on airplane mode. Focus. When the timer goes off, take a 10-minute break...and repeat! Simple, sustainable, and highly effective.
We teach all of our students the 50:10 method, along with other tips to get straight A's without the stress!
